Lecturers at the Lagos State University (LASU) resumed work on Wednesday
after the expiration of the one-week nationwide warning strike declared
by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Dr Isaac Oyewunmi, the Chairman, #LASU chapter of ASUU, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the resumption of work followed the directives of the #ASUU national body.
“We have all resumed today (Wednesday) as directed by the national body
because the one week strike elapsed on Tuesday by 11.59 p.m.’’
According to him, academic activities have returned and will continue
until there is a contrary directive from the national body.
The chairman said the next line of action would be determined by the
union’s national body after it meets to review the outcome of the
warning strike.
#Oyewunmi said following the warning strike, negotiation would continue between the union and the Federal Government.
“It is either the government is ready to meet our demands or face our
next line of action as there is no going back on our demands,’’ he said.
A NAN correspondent who visited LASU confirmed that academic activities
had resumed as students were seen across departments and faculties
attending lectures.
ASUU declared the one-week warning strike which began on Nov. 16 to press home their demands from the Federal Government.
The demands include the implementation of the 2009 agreement as well as
the exclusion of universities from the Single Treasury Account.

Too Big To Handle.... LASU Win Big Against UI, FUNAAB & FUTA.
Just when LASU was the distinguished Tony Elumelu to the school, students of the school nevee failed to make it yet another rewarding day at the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, FUNAAB for an inter-university debate and Public Speaking competition!
The #LASU Team was ably represented by: Akinsiwaju #Sanya , 400L English Education, Tiamiyu #Hezekiah 200L Law, Lawal Ademola #Ibraheem 300L Marketing, Apatira #Simisola 300L English Education, Uzuegbu #Faith 300L English Language, Ogunsanya #Fuhad 400L Bus. Admin, Ajekigbe #Semirah 200L Botany!
The competition had 6 Nigerian universities invited but 4 schools were present for the competition, they are: The University of Ibadan, UI; Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA; host university FUNAAB and the prestigious Lagos State University, LASU!
The University of Ibadan came 3rd place, FUNAAB came 2nd while LASU came 1st.
Lasu Plans 6,000 Hostels Accommodation For Students.
Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU) says about 6,000 students will be accommodated in the first phase of the institution’s hostel projects.
Fagbohun disclosed this plan at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Lagos.
“Hostel is a critical component of university life; one of the major things that it does is bonding.
“It allows and assists for bonding within the students and even for effective management of the students.
“The good thing about it, the House of Assembly and pursuant to the directives of Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, we have now been authorised to go ahead with hostel accommodation for our students.
“One of the things that is very common with Nigerians is uncompleted projects and you see a lot of interferences of political this; political that; everybody wanting to be part of hostel development.
“We did not want to engage ourselves in that. So we brought in transaction advisers, we brought in Price Water Coppers.
“We did an advert for expression of interests and it was heavily subscribed, we had about 40 companies that applied.
“We have now passed all of that to Price Water Coppers to do the selection, checking financial capability; checking the technical competence; checking the track records; doing a comprehensive diligence on all of those who have applied and making a selection.
“What we want to do in the first phase is to accommodate between 5,000 and 6,000 students.
“This development is going to be done at Ojo; it will also go on at our Epe campus where we have the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Agriculture and PGS programme (Post Graduate Students).
Fagbohun said that the university had to take that initiative because if it asked government to build the hostels, “it will not work because we all know there is so much demands on the purse of government. So government cannot do it alone’’.
He explained that part of what the PWC was doing was to determine the rent at which to give the hostel rooms to students.
“This was a resounding point by the management during discussion that the charge must be affordable,’’ he said.
He noted that the hostel charges must not be beyond the reach of the average student; it must be such that a student from any of the income group is able to afford.
According to him, the project will be done through public private partnership (PPP) as there is so much demand from the government by different sector.

THE EUPHORIA OF CGPA AND THE ILLUSION OF SUCCESS
The Nigerian educational system has passed through some facets. With the Tertiary level, being the zenith of this Britannic model of education. Over the past decades, what has proved to be a subject of passion, zeal, desperation and extremism in Nigerian Universities is the #CGPA. Upon admission into the University, the goal of every student is to graduate with a FIRST CLASS. Majority of such dreams, more often than not, dies in the second year into the University.
Obviously, the CGPA (Cumulative Gradient Point Average) massages ego, it inspires smile and induces tears. Why does a decimal point carries so much weight to an extent; people commit suicide for not making a targeted Gradient Point? The society has made us to believe albeit erroneously; that, not making a good CGPA means not making it in life. More worrisome is the fact that; there is this delusion among many undergraduates that a '5.0' CGPA will automatically earn you a wealthy life in the outside world. This is false and quite delusional! Although, it gives you a cushion, but there is far much more needed to navigate through the storm of the outside world.
Fundamentally, the Nigerian Educational System can be likened to a Zoo, where the Zookeeper in a quest to test which animal is the strongest, gathers the Antelope, Giraffe, Monkey, Lion and Tiger and declares thus : "whoever climbs the tree first is the strongest animal in the Zoo". Surely, the monkey will win under such circumstances but the monkey is no match for the Lion or even the Tiger. Given this analogy, it therefore appears that in every society; where there is no equal level playing ground, any result produced from any contest is bound to be distorted as it lacks the fundamentals of a true competition. In this light, not everybody is made for the Nigerian University System. Some are better off as fashion models, musicians, technicians, photographers, craftsmen et all. These people and their ilk are meant to be in special skill acquisition and development centers and not in a place their talents doesn't belong to and thus, may never be maximized in such an environment. Admittedly, the basic knowledge and usage of English is a prerequisite to make headway in a British colonized country like ours. This can however be achieved outside the four walls of the University. English studies, etiquette and soft skills(which are not even taught in the University) should be incorporated into the syllabus of such centers. This is how it is done in the Western world.
Instinctively, there are three categories of students in Nigerian Universities. The first being the so called "book worms or scholars". The second being the "average or normal students" and the third category being a conglomeration of misled elements, who surely have no business in a sane University Environment. After taking a deeper observation, I pointed out other group within these categories. Time won't permit me to digress that much but these observations will be integrated into the analysis of the larger groups.
Using the overemphasized CGPA as a yardstick, the first category, to be frank, are predominantly students whose cgpa falls between 4.4 to 5.0(on a scale of 5.0). These are the revered 'geniuses' on our campuses. They are the 'living and moving books', as the society has taught us to believe. However, there is something paradoxical about this category of people. Many of them are aided by the way the system is structured and their academic success is not necessarily a product of invincibility. The system has made little room for innovations but it has rather strongly maintained a high level of conservatism. The system also encourages cramming. Hence, a student who crams a lecture note and gives it back to the Lecturer; verbatim in the exam is more likely to have a distinction than a student who made an indepth research or even have a better in depth knowledge of the course. There are empirical facts to back this up. The reason being that, most lecture notes images the sentiments of a Professor about a concept or topic. Once a student toes the same path in answering his examination question, he will be on the same wavelength with the lecturer who would then key into his answers. Most times, when students go 'too deep' into a course by unraveling so many things that were not taught in class and flaunts such 'new knowledge' in his answer booklet, such students are most likely to get a C. The 'verbatim givers' are much more likely to have an A. Little wonder why some students can read a singular course material 10times before exam - the system rewards such approach, the verbatim givers, I choose to call them. I do not hold any grudge against the 'genuises', what I find quite bewildering about most of them is the tradition of studying the same set of materials from the beginning of the semester till the end all under the auspices of getting As. Why should I study a course material(which was probably used by the ancestors of my department) all through the semester? This is very crazy. A high CGPA without the initiative to solve societal problems is a WASTE. I once met a Frist Class student from the University of Ibadan who can recite all the theories of Karl Marx, John Locke, Aristotle, Plato, Voltaire and others. I was stunned and mesmerized by such enormous knowledge. However, when I challenged this great friend of mine to apply all his knowledge towards proffering a solution to a national crisis I posed before him, he stuttered. His initial eloquence that poured out the theories suddenly went into oblivion. Apparently on paper, he is a genius. But in practice(the most important aspect), he evidently appears to be impotent. If the materials you study doesn't propel you to 'think out of the box', my brother, shelve them and go on a journey of self discovery. I've seen so many 'scholars' who starts a sentence with "Am", who doesn't even know when to use "Have and I've". Some can't even properly spell the basic things related to their course and you begin to wonder how they attained such Cumulative Gradient Point. Truly, no man is an island and everyday, to me, is a new day to learn new things. However, when you dedicate all your time on pursuing a singular goal, you are very much unlikely to learn anything new in life, other than the materials, you've confined your brain to. The University is not a place to pursue a singular goal. It shouldn't be a one-way traffic where all you pursue is "GP, GP, GP, GP! ". The outside world will demand far much more than that 'decimal point' you hold high like an oxygen. Self development they say is the key to greatness. The greatest and richest men in the world barely graduated with a high CGPA. In fact, they even dropped out of the University. I'm talking about the likes of Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. What makes them great was their ability to identify a societal problem, think about a possible solution, expand great possibilities and here they are today. Problem solvers mostly ends up being the greatest acheivers. Are you investing in yourself? How well do you spend your time? Do you spend all your day clinging to your books? My brother, you are not an undergraduate if all you do is to romance those books - 24/7. Being an undergraduate is an opportunity to explore other possibilities apart from your academics, it is a time to learn new things, discover your ever changing world, meet new people, network and if possible, learn new skills. How often do you learn new things? By new things, I do not mean the next topic on your course outline. No. I'm very much far from that. Rather by new things, I mean : the needed soft skills, continuous improvement of your communication and public speaking skills, understanding your ever changing world and how you intend to navigate through the stormy way to your career.
The world is changing. The society now demands much more than CGPAs and similarly, academic brilliance is not just enough. We are in a century, Professor Lanre Fagbohun described as a "century that abhors excusiologists but instead promotes the deep thinkers - problem solvers. According to him, it is a century of CLASH OF IDEAS".
The thing is, in the labour market, there are thousands of four-poster (4point) graduates. In fact, majority of Covenant University graduates made either a First Class or a 2'1. What will distinguish you from the crowd won't be your result but rather your ability to understand, anayse and proffer intelligent solutions to problems. A good result surely gives you an edge, but it's not just enough. Personally, my best moments as an undergraduate have proven to be a product of self development and deep thinking, with little or no attachment to the decimal point on my DPU profile. The only attachment it appears to have is the fact that I've never allowed it to be on warning/withdrawn. Thus, maintaining my studentship in LASU.
Surely, I do not celebrate mediocrity. In fact, as an undergraduate, who knows the reasons for being in the University, your CGPA - no matter how political, religious or busy you are, should NEVER fall below 3.4 or at worst, 3.0! Anything short of that is most likely a lack of seriousness and misplaced priorities. Although, I also do not particularly blame the people that are even below 2.0. The reason being that : many of the students in the University have no business in the University in the first place. Many would have been better productive as photographers, event planners, musicians, technicians etc after leaving various skill acquisition or training centers (as I mentioned earlier). Some are even born business men and women. Meanwhile, even majority of the ones that have the traits of a typical undergraduate are studying courses they never dreamt of studying. Hence, the whole system is distorted. There is no equal level playing ground. Apparently, there is a need for a rejig and review of the nation's curriculum.
Notably, high CGPAs boosts chances of gaining scholarships and Postgraduate admission into the likes of Harvard and Oxford University. It must however be also pointed out that self development, extra curricular activities, politics(student leadership) also plays pivotal roles in gaining admission into the ivory league Universities as well. Oxford University for instance, doesn't admit based on high CGPA alone. A check on their website shows. Likewise testimonies from their graduates. In fact, they highly rate potential post-graduate students who involved actively in extracurricular activities, student leadership and those who also participated in various competitions while they were undergraduates. It is never a one way traffic.
Consequent on the foregoing, I hold no intention to hurt the feelings of anybody. Rather, I intend to awaken the consciousness of my readers to their ever changing world. The world keeps transcending and it's really disturbing when I see many people pursue a singular goal as undergraduates. More stinging; is the reality that your stay in the University is also very short. Shockingly, some live it as if life ends in the University. The 4 - 5 years is nothing. Before you know it, you are already out of the system - facing the shock of the outside world. Most Importantly, I do not intend to portray myself as an invincible or immortal human. I make mistakes and fail virtually everyday. But, I learn from every moment of my life. The primary goal of this article is to bring to the fore : the little experience I've had and what I've also learnt from other people. Having a massive CGPA is good, it gives you an edge to some extent. However, it is never a free meal ticket in the outside world. Finally, graduating with a First Class is great, but going through the rigors of self development, deep thinking and networking makes you a quintessential graduate.
Best wishes.

List Compilation Is Barbaric - NABAS-LASU President
It is barbaric and a slap on the face of the Lagos State Scholarship Board to tell us to compile the list of those they are owing before they could pay our #bursary.
When last did we compile list before payment is being made? I will not alter any blame on the Scholarship Board for telling us to compile list, I would rather blame those that had the meeting with them because they refuse to question the abnormality of that statement. To me, this shows that they are not ready to pay any BURSARY, they are just using the list to push us forward.
We know their tricks and together we say no to this. If truly they want to pay us, they know how to go about it. They should not pay our bursary based on sentiment or nepotism, by favouring some microscopic few people, but rather pay us all.
It is our RIGHT, and not a privilege. We Believe Strongly In Governor #Ambode's Administration because he has never failed and won't fail us.
Together we say.... #NoToListCompilation

TB Joshua's Student Makes Nigeria Proud In UK (Photos
A prodigious Nigerian student is proudly flying the flag for country and continent in the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
This beautiful lady, Olayinka Oduwole, has been highlighted as the sole African representative in Oxford University’s ‘Woman In Engineering’, a list containing just 25 female scholars who are excelling in their chosen fields.
“I have been privileged to meet enormously gifted personalities, who are not just academically strong but with ambition to change the world in which they live and leave a permanent footprint in history,” Olayinka wrote in her profile, featured prominently on the University of Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science website. The University of Lagos graduate is at the tale-end of a PhD program at Kellogg College, Oxford, after the completion of a successful Master’s degree at University College London, UK.
In contrast to several Nigerian prodigies who are functioning abroad, Oduwole has already stated her resolve to use her invaluable experience to develop her country of origin.
“I intend to use my skills to help encourage young ones in my country into pursuing science and engineering; I intend to help revive the declining state of research in my country,” Olayinka stated on the Oxford University website, who used her as an example of an African student who was excelling amidst the competitive environment of the prestigious university.
The story of Olayinka is inspirational to say the least. From a
poverty-stricken home, she was working diligently in church when spotted
by Nigerian Pastor and philanthropist, T.B. Joshua.
Recognising her academic prowess and meagre financial backing, the cleric sponsored her tertiary education in its totality.
“What you make happen for others, God will make happen for you,” Joshua told congregants when announcing he was supporting the young student with £100,000 (N45,000,000) to pursue her PhD in Oxford in 2012.
In a clip uploaded to Joshua’s official YouTube channel Emmanuel TV, Olayinka gives clear advice to her fellow students seeking academic success: "Pray as if everything depends on God and work as if everything depends on you."
With graduation around the corner, a bright future lies ahead for the young Nigerian engineer.
Miss LASU 2016: The Beautiful Nonsense!.
An anonymous and angered Lasuite could not contain the rage within after attending #MissLASU2016, see what he sent across to showcase his/her observation of the event:
So the Miss LASU Beauty Peageant event ended today with a new event company handling the project #MLK event planning, if you are familiar with the Lagos state miss tourism you should know them well, the Miss #LASU is one of the biggest show in the Lagos State University community and a lot of expectation are suppose to be met with and judging from the last year event all I can say is this is the worst event ever orchestrated inside the school as the organisers #MLK did not only disappoint the students, he also lied about the appearance of DMW artistes Dremo and Mayorkun and the Information that got to me about there absence was that the organisers did not pay there money for the show but all he was saying was that day should come that he will pay them after the show.. please where is it done like that? This was a Big F9 on MLK events maybe there was not enough money to pay the artist 'hmmmmm'
An audition was been put in place by the organisers for LASU artist you were going to perform at the event, the screening was done and the selected artist were already told about there performance many of them were already on campus by 10:00am just to know when they were going to perform but, only to get a shocking news that all performing artist must buy ticket before they can allowed to perform.
Now my question to you Mr MLK sir
1. Were you going to pay all those artist for there performance?
2. Is that how to encourage up and coming Artist?
And if you know that they were going to buy a spot on our own school event why didn't you just tell them that in the first place than letting them go through the stress of auditioning?
To the event proper first the sound system used by the organisers was of low grade and bad quality now most of you will say that's the Djs fault but the truth of the matter is he was just been confirm as the dj for the event that morning and on top of that the organisers did not pay him well for his service so he gave them what they paid for. Another big flop by the organisers was the main show its self honestly speaking I was not sure it was a beauty pageant event that was going on to those that can testify last year was DOPE well that is all I have to say about this dry/sad event given to us as entertainment by MLK events
And please we hope not to see you next year sir thank you..
And congratulations to the new Beauty Queen..

The Authority of Lagos State University, acting in the interest and the
protection of the good image of the institution, has banned an event
outfit, Willy Wears and Associates from sponsoring or organizing any
event at the University.
The outfit in conjunction with Faculty of Arts Students’ Association staged a Fashion show on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the Theatre Arts Auditorium, main Campus, Ojo, Lagos without obtaining approval from the University authority.
According to the Students’ Affairs Division, in a letter to the Association and Willy Wears and Associates contravened the existing procedures for approval, simply because procedures were not met by the association before starting the event. Faculty Of Arts Get New Dean In Prof. Adeleke Lefak Fakoya,
Good news are coming out of LASU these days, after the gut wrenching
antics of the former VC nearly brought the University to her knees.
First was tinkering with the laws setting up #LASU
; making it a residential institution, proclaiming the single five year
tenure for Vice Chancellors and returning major decision making powers
to the Governing board and the Senate.
On top of these were the appointment of youthful professor Adigun #Fagbhoun
as Vice Chancellor and a total facelift of the main campus, thereby
creating an environment conducive for teaching and research for the
first time in over a decade.
And now with the election of Professor Adeleke Lefak #Fakoya, as Dean, Faculty of #Arts, it is obvious that finally, round pegs are being put in round holes.
Congratulations to Dean #Lefak

Bookmarking In Nigeria And The New Trends Of Gambling In NIgeria
What prompted me to writing this article is the argument we are currently having here which is proving to be a much heated conversation among my course-mates and hostel mates with some sections claiming that bookmarking also known as "sport bet" which as become a very popular involvement among mostly male youths and older men alike is not gambling but rewarding pleasure with something in your pocket, in Nigeria basically the nations obsession "soccer"
I had to do a little research because even i was carried away with all the shouting and with real life inceptions and adaptations, but what really baffled me the most was when i had a flashback about my friend that lost that amount of money on a Monday morning, about the implications of gambling to a persons finance and social well-being. In Nigeria their are various gambling platforms from those that have existed before even my father was born "pools" the more recent inventions like "baba ijebu" and "sportbetting". The negative implications by far outweighs the positive because for a 13years old to lose his money for textbook to "sportbetting" or what have you is a big NO for me.
That will be all for today i remain my humble self @iam_whyphy addressing the wrong addresses in our society
.
Internet Fraudsters in Nigeria What Age is Average Nigerian Exposed To The FEVER
Internet scamming or ''Yahoo Yahoo'' as my street brothers call it or
are involved in it, has been a source of of mysteriously unexplained
increase in the GDP of the Nigerian economy. The ''419'' theory has a
very thick and rugged stand in the average Nigerian DNA.
Time
and times, orientations, awareness and sensitization, and strict
government laws varying from huge fines, imprisonment penalties have been
made with very stringent bail conditions to get out of any
entanglements if found guilty or caught in the act
But what
really bothers me most that drove me to writing the short article is
really to determining what age is the Nigerian child exposed to the
internet scamming techniques in which they acquire immense experience in
the art of cunning potential ''Clients or Magas'' to part with
money, expensive gadget, even international traveling opportunities with
the view of getting international stay in the diaspora of their choice i
which frequently destinations are within African continent which
include South Africa, Ghana and some remote islands the don't even
reflect on the map and international destinations include Malaysia
(Malay Bois), UK, America and some European countries
In
Nigeria you will find mostly boys and in few cases girls under the age
of 16-19, boys carrying dreadlocks with no form of formal educational
qualifications or technical know-how in informal education with huge
some of money cooling off in their bank accounts and driving expensive
cars with underground fame and fortune.

S.P.A.I.N Says Making Mistakes Is Normal, Try Moving On
When i started using BIRO in my primary school and i made a mistakes, i try hard to erase it, sometimes i use chalk but it later reappears so i began to use saliva, it worked only to leave holes in my book. My teachers then used to beat me for being outrageously dirty, but all i tied to do was to cover my errors .
One day, a kindhearted teacher who loved me so mush called me aside and said "See any time you make a mistake just cross it and move on, trying to erase it would only damage your book, i asked " but i dont want people to see my mistakes and laugh at me, i protested and she said " trying to erase it would make people know more about your mess and the stigma is for life.
Have you ever made a mistake? Cross it and move on.
Happy new week Lasuites from #SPAIN.

LIBERTY ADVOCACY
10/07/2016
02:05 PM
Liberty advocacy is a living voice which shall be exercised through leadership by example for i believe in freedom, and as the mouthpiece of freedom whose watchword is discipline, the power of my advocacy shall be in my rectitude as it is only through this National value shall in honour as a student.
Its all going to be a world of self discipline throughout my advocacy mandate.
I shall endeavour to offer constructive criticism Which it will be my primary mission to be a voice for the voiceless.
The Latinized "advoco" in my advocacy, harmonized well with the Yoruba and hausa languages, in which the "voco" in it share cognate meaning with "waka" while the "advow" which is a call to sing to a person is the same as "kesi" in Yoruba as this English means beckoning to someone.
Just as it is also a matter of "viva voci" being a living voice, i shall represent the living voice of the student employing the right word as season demands, while i shall not hesitate to apply the rod of my pen and the spirit of the ink on the wicked and those who are happy to tie the destiny of this campus to the pole of idealness.
It is in the interchange enterprise of word curiously that the V in "viva" finds a friendly alternative in Yoruba W or B where in the same equation, it amounts to "baki", called mouth in Hausa and "ibaka" known as canary bird in Yoruba, while laying credence to the Yoruba proverb that AROYE ENU NI ISE IBAKA KIKE NI ISE EIYE LOKO.
This means that, as the proverbial canary bird whose business is to serve as the mouthpiece of the down trodden, i shall not speak in corners or in whispers, i shall impact and raise my voice.
The rod of my mouth and the lively spirit of my lip will offer praise whenever it is due for, to look at rod in its philological gamut, to understand the universality and topicality of my focus or advocacy as this is a symbol of leadership exuded in "erdo" a fulani word that stands for leader even from which "ado bayero" tittle was carved.
My advocacy also faithfully bears the mark of commitment to order which in
Latin parlance is "ordo" portending authority like the rod of speakership, altogether metamorphosing in the word mace or hammer for the auctioneer or for the judge whose order must stand erect like the words of prophets which must not fall on the ground
Again my advocacy still representing the Same word rod which is an evidence of life because of it ability to speak power which is "arido" being the "urobo" word for power of the word or call it broadcast.
I have gone it this lengthy to assure my readers and supporters' that its not going to be an age without name hence we are here to ensure uprightness as the road is a symbol of rectitude
Welcome to the world of impact through liberty advocacy.

ASUU FAULTS JAMB
ASUU to faults Jamb on new Admission guidelines...
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan
chapter, has lashed out at the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board
(JAMB) for acting beyond its powers by releasing admission guidelines
for Nigerian universities.
The union said it is the mandate of the Senate of Nigerian universities to regulate admission modalities and determine what best suits each institution.
The ASUU Chairman at the institution, Dr. Deji Omole, stated this while reacting to the 2016 admission guidelines recently released by JAMB.
He said both the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, and JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, are confused and inconsistent by first going against collection of administrative charges under Post-UTME by universities, but now preaching payment of screening fees in “its illegal guidelines which is designed to favour the children of the rich against the poor.”
Omole said Adamu and Ojerinde are unaware of happenings in Nigeria universities, adding that the newly released point – based scoring system is not new as it was innovated and used at the University of Ibadan for five years and abandoned.
He stressed that the institution has moved beyond such model of admitting students.
He said, “JAMB is acting beyond its mandate which is to conduct and release results. The Senate of universities has the right to determine the model or guideline to adopt to admit their students from the pool of candidates sent to it by JAMB.
“Each university has standards which are not subjected to the whims and caprices of any government appointee. JAMB does not have the powers to tell universities how to conduct their screening. It is a way to cover up their inadequacies because JAMB’s credibility as an examination body is yearly being queried.
“JAMB and its handlers are confused. Last year, they arbitrarily placed students in private universities to satisfy the needs of their cronies. These were mainly children of the poor who had not chosen those institutions. In the just concluded JAMB examinations, they awarded candidates with extra 40 marks without any justification.
“Now, those with two sittings results will be shortchanged and those awaiting
results will be disadvantaged. There will be rise in result racketeering at WAEC again as people will be purchasing grade ‘A’ since that is what will guarantee admission.
“More miracle examination centers will spring up and JAMB and the minister would have succeeded in entrenching corruption and further kill university education in Nigeria. ASUU stands by university autonomy. JAMB cannot determine admission guidelines for universities, rather JAMB must be overhauled to make their results believable and trusted.

An open letter to every Lasuite
Dearest Lasuites,
Am sorry but I have no option than to engage you in this lengthy discussion, and I would be glad if you can stay with me to the end.
I have never felt to be part of Lasu until the recent turn of events, just one of those students who never cared about anything that happens to the student populace in as much as it doesn’t affect me.
However the new tidal waves in Lasu made me veer off this selfish course.
Lasu has moved on from being repositioned for excellence to be an institution we can be proud of anywhere we go. To call yourself a Lasuite itself is a brand to be reckoned with.
Change they say is the only Constant thing in the world; and as the mantra in the country now is change, it is my dream to see the wave of change sweep across the entire student body.
There are certain issues I have held in my heart, in which I believe for the student body to be able to tag along with the world class vision of the Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun led administration, certain changes must take place.
Firstly, I believe we must learn the culture of promoting our own brands. Ayo Balogun (wizkid), was a student of the university of Lagos, before he became the famous person he is today, his school then, played an active role in his career, even if am not sure he has acknowledged this, because I can remember an interview some years back before the fame and stardom, where he credited his fellow students for listening to his songs, and his popularity grew from there on till he got to EME.
Lagos State University is laden with bountiful talents, but the world knows this not. There are plethora of artists, designers, singers, rappers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and the likes in Lasu, but how will the world know this if we don’t sell our brand to the world. From my findings, a number of people don’t want to listen to songs made by their fellow lasuites because they believe they can’t produce anything better, but you are mistaken. The University of Lagos, has been known as a hotbed for talents across every field this is still tied to one reason; PR. I watched a 20 seconds video of the convocation play, and I can’t help but be wowed by the sonorous tune of the “osun de, Olomi” song coupled with the fantastic theatrics of our beloved Lasuites. Let us learn to promote the talented ones amongst us, you are helping a soul here. I dont know how well I can express his thought, but these things should be like a virus, it has to spread from Lasu to the world., Secondly I as a person thinks the Students’ union has to rebrand. Vibrancy has been a part of Lasusu from the start and I believe the Union must rebrand so as to make the Union inviting to every student, to make the Union something that every student is dying to be part of, but the reverse is the case today. If you told me that Lasu is East of Limpopo and North to Arabia in 1765 when there was no GPS, might agree, but not in 2016, knowing fully well that Limpopo is in South Africa which is south from here, Arabia is to the East from here OMG. The time has come to rebrand the Union to make it an idealistic, liberal and conservative Union, but not throwing away our fighting spirit. The university is building a school to be proud of, let us make a union to be proud of.
Lastly we must tackle the I don’t care spirit that is ravaging across the entire student populace. A certain individual on a whatsapp Group chat insulted those affected by the GNS issue, boasting about how he scored 5. I couldn’t help but be astonished by the idiocy displayed by that individual. As I have mentioned earlier, there are some certain set of students who does not give a shit if the whole school scored 0, in as much as, they aren’t affected. This is a cankerworm that is against all tenets of unionism, an injury to one, has never being an injury to all. All for one, one for all, is the sole reason of unionism, not for us to raise our voices just because it affects us, but because one of our own has been affected. We must learn to imbibe that communal spirit which is a drive to achieve greater things collectively.
I am grateful for your time and patience, however I want to reiterate the fact that this is my own personal opinion and should not in any way be viewed as the general consensus.
I am a Lasuite, I am proud.
Thanks
Michael Goldsworth.

DOPE LASU@ ONE
Dope Lasu
is the name of a brand in Lagos State University. The word Dope can be
interpreted in several ways. However the context in which we use it is
“the slang context” .When something is exquisite, when it is cool, when
it looks so good , it gets you saying WOW” you say its “DOPE”.
The brand
was created June 12th 2015 with the opening of our first instagram
handle “@dope__lasu” (2underscores). Dope lasu was created to promote
LASU and rebrand the mentality people have about our school. A lot of
people think all we ever do in LASU is cultism and strike. We at Dope
lasu decided to change that mentality through the use of social media.
We promoted and showcased Lasuites who were not just only fashionable,
talented but also those who are intelligent. We also promote brands,
creativity; encourage young entrepreneurs within and outside Lasu. Dope
lasu was opened in other to create a close relationship between the
students amidst of other things “Our Aim is TO PROMOTE, CONNECT AND
UNITE LASUITES”
We
introduced terms like “Dope lasuites, the beautiful ones in lasu, real
niggas in lasu , tell a friend to tell a friend about dope lasu” and
today lasuites use these terms on social media as they now trend . We
were not the first Lasu page on social media however we are loved by
several Lasuites. Before January first 2016 Dope lasu was handled by two
persons. However by January first 2016,
A team of 8persons was created and they include
1) Mariam Yussuff- @mahr33ham
2) Ofuani chinedu – @themainchris_
3)Abiodun olamide – @midey_millz
4) Adewale salau – @kvngsalau
5) Badiru yewande – @dudulewami
6) Willams Emmanuel- @willz_Jamal
7)Campbell eniola- @_fikunmi
8)Fatimehin ikeoluwaa – @_arifay
Each
person being a student in Lasu, representing their various faculties,
thus the DOPE FAMILY became a bigger one. By February this year we got a
direct message from Wema bank via instagram. They wanted us to work
with them for the Orientation for fresh students, after the interview at
the Wema Lasu branch. We hadcontract with them and thus the Dope Lasu team members became Wema ambassadors.
1) Mariam Yussuff- @mahr33ham
2) Ofuani chinedu – @themainchris_
3)Abiodun olamide – @midey_millz
4) Adewale salau – @kvngsalau
5) Badiru yewande – @dudulewami
6) Willams Emmanuel- @willz_Jamal
7)Campbell eniola- @_fikunmi
8)Fatimehin ikeoluwaa – @_arifay
A week
after the orientation program we changed our brands logo and gave it a
NEW Look.. After that we organized a contest and the two winners with
the highest likes Omarion Veracruz ( @omarioncruz_ and Amuni Damilola (
@bee_horla )emerged First Ever FacesOFDopeLasu. By march the 11th we had
their first official shoot with designers like @Annexkayclothing
@kibk_couture @house_of_willz ,Make up artists like @dudulewami
@cecilemakeovers , Lasu’s top Photographers @kvngsalau @adeoyeonisemo
@ortegahbenjamin. We the team members also had our first shoot with Dope
lasu tees, We invited Dynamixmagazine to cover the shoots and interview
the FacesofDopeLasu. That evening the first Dope Lasu account
@dope__lasu (2underscores) with over 8000followers got hacked for the
first time. The whole team was upset.. We had planned a lot of shoots
for our FacesOfDopeLasu but we had to push them aside and focus on the
account. After 1 weeks we opened Our Second account and named it
“@Dopelasu” within two weeks we had gained over 6000 followers. On the
3rd week of April 3rd 2016 The account got hacked again, It was a Sunday
morning. That week the team came together and we agreed to open an
account but keep it on the low for a while and think about ways to
secure the account .Eventually after the exams by the second week of MAY
we unveiled the 3rd dope lasu account using “3underscores” and we are
grateful to all our loyal followers and supporters. Lasuites and non
lasuites who have been with us throughout. We appreciate the love. As at
June 1st 2016 we had over 12k followers and we would be celebrating our
One year anniversary on June12. One year of Growth, Love, Tough times,
honestly it wasn’t easy but we came through. The team has been so
strong. They never for once thought about giving up.
Through
the rough times they stood and were very strong.. We are more than a
team, We are a Family, To everyone who has been Supportive. THANK YOU, your love keeps us going, as June 12 is around the corner. We are excited about our 1st anniversary. Dope lasu At one.
Not just because we have achieved a lot but because we have achieved
our aim. Which is to promote, connect and unite lasuites. Within one
year we have become ambassadors for several brands such as Wema bank,
campusmovers Nigeria, 9jacampusstyle , campushubb, nigeriacampusconnect
,sulcataent . We are also media partners for Nigerian students fashion
designers week 2016, Willywears fashion show, Powerball 2016, Mlk events
( organizers of miss lasu this year) . With over 27k followers on our

This is why the Students' Union and University Management have, overtime, been on a mutual position whereby students can get their social life. One of this is the MISS LASU Contest.

LASG Partner Google To Train Lasuites, Others.
The Lagos State government has announced a collaboration with Google to provide digital skills training for 50,000 students of Lagos State tertiary institutions.
Announcing the pact in his office, the special adviser on education, Mr Obafela #Bank-Olemoh, said the three-month training would be open to students of the Lagos State University ( #LASU ), Lagos State Polytechnic ( #LASPOTECH ), Ikorodu; Michael Otedola College of Primary Education ( #MOCPED ), Epe; Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education ( #AOCOED ), Ijanikin; and the Lagos State College of Health Sciences, and other interested members of the public.
“We are trying to position our students to function in the 21st Century and digital skills are important to us. The number of students we will be training is 50,000. We are confident that if we give Lagosians skills to complete, they’ll do wonderful things,” he said.
Bank-Olemoh added that students that do very well in the training would be selected as Google trainers and would help the communication company to implement future training programmes.
Country Manager for #Google, Mrs Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor said the training is coming at the right time given the potential of the Internet to generate income.
“Everyone needs digital skills. It is really important that tertiary institutions incorporate digital training into their curriculum.
“A recent McKenzie report states that from 2013 to 2020, the Internet would contribute 300billion dollars to the GDP. This training will span three months leveraging on the ICT facilities in the various institutions,” she said.
Mrs Ehimuan-Chiazor said the modules will focus on gaining the basic digital skills, how to run a business online, social media, online marketing, and the like.
Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Google, said free registration is open for the training on a designated website, www.digifyafrica.com.
Okebukola: Fagbohun And Ninalowo's Appointments Help Restore LASU Glory
The former National Universities Commission Executive Secretary, Prof.
Peter Okebukola, has commended the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi #Ambode, for the restoration of peace at the Lagos State University.
The governor’s fresh interventions, Okebukola said, would lift the ivory tower to loftier heights.
The professor of Science Education, who spoke to our correspondent on the sidelines of the 20th convocation of the university, noted particularly that the action of the governor would end the “festering unrest” in the 33-year-old ivory tower.
He identified the five-year single term for vice-chancellor; 70-year retirement age for full professors and 65 years for others as well as the provision of infrastructure as some of the fresh measures that would bring lasting peace to the university.
Okebukola added that the appointment of professors 'Lanre #Fagbohun and Adebayo #Ninalowo as the #VC and the Chairman of the Governing Council respectively would help to restore the university’s lost glory.
Meanwhile, #Okebukola has disagreed with his successor, Prof. Julius Okojie, on the call for the establishment of more universities by the Lagos State Government.
Okojie, represented by the Executive Director, Quality Assurance, at NUC, Prof. Chiedu Mafiana, had during the convocation urged the state government to establish more universities.
Okebukola, who said time was not ripe for the call, rather canvassed the expansion of LASU’s carrying capacity to admit more candidates.
He advised the governor, “With the inclement economic state of the nation and its federating units and with the huge financial investment needed to achieve your vision for LASU of being the best university in Africa in the shortest possible time, venturing into setting up more universities will be biting more than the state can chew at this time.
“I believe the spirit of the #NUC advice is to expand access to the teeming youth who are unable to gain university admission by encouraging states that have the financial muscle to establish more universities.
“I am unsure if the “thickness” of the financial muscle of Lagos State can support more universities, hence my advice is to shunt part of the financial muscle to elevate #LASU to be the best in Nigeria and among the top five in Africa during your administration.”
