I was discussing with a friend of mine who was sharing his story of
how he lost 15,000 naira on a blessed monday morning playing virtual
soccer at a bookmarking outlet close to our hostel. Actually i was
laughing at him but i know how it feels because almost all males of
different age,class,societal status and educational background would
like to invest in pleasure "gambling" with a possibility that their
investment might either be lost or multiplied in folds and their is also
this human trait that has to do with greediness, because i was looking a
bet slip of a person with a 100 Naira stake and a possible outcome of
5.3million Naira with a lot of risky football match predictions attached
to it.What prompted me to writing this article is the argument we are currently having here which is proving to be a much heated conversation among my course-mates and hostel mates with some sections claiming that bookmarking also known as "sport bet" which as become a very popular involvement among mostly male youths and older men alike is not gambling but rewarding pleasure with something in your pocket, in Nigeria basically the nations obsession "soccer"
I had to do a little research because even i was carried away with all the shouting and with real life inceptions and adaptations, but what really baffled me the most was when i had a flashback about my friend that lost that amount of money on a Monday morning, about the implications of gambling to a persons finance and social well-being. In Nigeria their are various gambling platforms from those that have existed before even my father was born "pools" the more recent inventions like "baba ijebu" and "sportbetting". The negative implications by far outweighs the positive because for a 13years old to lose his money for textbook to "sportbetting" or what have you is a big NO for me.
