Dearest Lasuites,
Am sorry but I have no option than to engage you in this lengthy
discussion, and I would be glad if you can stay with me to the end.
I have never felt to be part of Lasu until the recent turn of events,
just one of those students who never cared about anything that happens
to the student populace in as much as it doesn’t affect me.
However the new tidal waves in Lasu made me veer off this selfish course.
Lasu has moved on from being repositioned for excellence to be an
institution we can be proud of anywhere we go. To call yourself a
Lasuite itself is a brand to be reckoned with.
Change they say is the only Constant thing in the world; and as the
mantra in the country now is change, it is my dream to see the wave of
change sweep across the entire student body.
There are certain issues I have held in my heart, in which I believe for
the student body to be able to tag along with the world class vision of
the Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun led administration, certain changes
must take place.
Firstly, I believe we must learn the culture of promoting our own
brands. Ayo Balogun (wizkid), was a student of the university of Lagos,
before he became the famous person he is today, his school then, played
an active role in his career, even if am not sure he has acknowledged
this, because I can remember an interview some years back before the
fame and stardom, where he credited his fellow students for listening to
his songs, and his popularity grew from there on till he got to EME.
Lagos State University is laden with bountiful talents, but the world
knows this not. There are plethora of artists, designers, singers,
rappers, entrepreneurs, innovators, and the likes in Lasu, but how will
the world know this if we don’t sell our brand to the world. From my
findings, a number of people don’t want to listen to songs made by their
fellow lasuites because they believe they can’t produce anything
better, but you are mistaken. The University of Lagos, has been known as
a hotbed for talents across every field this is still tied to one
reason; PR. I watched a 20 seconds video
of the convocation play, and I can’t help but be wowed by the sonorous
tune of the “osun de, Olomi” song coupled with the fantastic theatrics
of our beloved Lasuites. Let us learn to promote the talented ones
amongst us, you are helping a soul here. I dont know how well I can
express his thought, but these things should be like a virus, it has to spread from Lasu to the world.,
Secondly I as a person thinks the
Students’ union has to rebrand. Vibrancy has been a part of Lasusu from
the start and I believe the Union must rebrand so as to make the Union
inviting to every student, to make the Union something that every
student is dying to be part of, but the reverse is the case today. If
you told me that Lasu is East of Limpopo and North to Arabia in 1765
when there was no GPS, might agree, but not in 2016, knowing fully well
that Limpopo is in South Africa which is south from here, Arabia is to
the East from here OMG. The time has come to rebrand the Union to make
it an idealistic, liberal and conservative Union, but not throwing away
our fighting spirit. The university is building a school to be proud of,
let us make a union to be proud of.
Lastly we
must tackle the I don’t care spirit that is ravaging across the entire
student populace. A certain individual on a whatsapp Group chat insulted
those affected by the GNS issue, boasting about how he scored 5. I
couldn’t help but be astonished by the idiocy displayed by that
individual. As I have mentioned earlier, there are some certain set of
students who does not give a shit if the whole school scored 0, in as
much as, they aren’t affected. This is a cankerworm that is against all
tenets of unionism, an injury to one, has never being an injury to all.
All for one, one for all, is the sole reason of unionism, not for us to
raise our voices just because it affects us, but because one of our own
has been affected. We must learn to imbibe that communal spirit which is
a drive to achieve greater things collectively.
I am grateful for your time and patience, however I want to reiterate
the fact that this is my own personal opinion and should not in any way
be viewed as the general consensus.
I am a Lasuite, I am proud.
Thanks
Michael Goldsworth.
